Competent Person

Under the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations, all employers will ensure that they have access to Competent Advice. The level of Competency which is required will depend upon the nature of the business and the differing levels of risk.

Competent Advice can be provided by someone in-house (who has had relevant training) or you can appoint a third party to provide this service.  For example, in a low risk environment (e.g. a serviced office), you may appoint someone in-house who has been on a Health & Safety awareness course. For an organisation who has a warehouse or factory operation a much higher level of training would be needed for your in-house competent person (see our section on training for further details).

It seems that anyone can be a Health & Safety Consultant these days. As long as you are enough of a jobsworth and own a clipboard many feel that you would fit the bill. We passionately disagree with this ideology and all of our Consultants are highly qualified professional individuals who have a wide range of sector experiences.

Our Consultants are Chartered Safety Practitioners and undertake a mandatory CPD programme with the Institution of Occupational Safety & Health. Added to this is the reassurance of membership to the Occupational Safety & Health Consultants Register which has been created by the Government.
